Conventional diesel fuels are very prone to autoignition. A lot of the expensive technology in modern diesel engines is required to alleviate the effects of this low ignition delay of the fuel in order to promote pre-mixed combustion to reduce smoke and NOx. Gasoline-like fuels, with higher resistance to autoignition are better suited for this type of combustion.
