Honda Announces Construction of New Manufacturing Plant

Indiana, 19 March 2007

Honda held a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the beginning of the construction of its new automobile plant Honda Manufacturing of Indiana, LLC (HMIN). The plant is expected to have an investment of $550 million. This new plant will produce Honda Civic sedan. Mass production is expected to begin in fall 2008 with an expected annual capacity of 200,000 vehicles. This new plant will be Honda’s seventh auto plant in North America and one of 17 major Honda’s manufacturing facilities in North America. The HMIN plant will help boost Honda’s total North American automobile production capacity from 1.4 million units to more than 1.6 million units in 2008. At this plant, Honda will carry out stamping, welding, painting, plastic injection molding, sub-assembly and final assembly operations. Honda will begin mass production of the 2009-model Civic sedan in fall 2008 and these will feature fuel-efficient four-cylinder engines manufactured in Anna, Ohio. The auto major is committed to limiting the environmental impact of the plant, including ISO 14001 international environmental management certification, and advanced methods of energy and emission reduction with the goal to be a "zero waste to landfill" facility.
